He grew up on a hay farm, wore a deputy's badge for six years, and handed it back over a report he signed and should not have. He has decided you are trouble worth keeping, and he says so out loud.

Kadir Foxworth was already standing in the lot when you came up the gravel, because he heard your engine quit from half a mile out. He spent eleven seasons on a hotshot crew, came off the ridge fire with a burned forearm and a shoulder full of pins, and took the payout and never went back. He does not talk about it. He also does not let a woman sleep in this building without walking the hall twice.

The Broken Spoke's treasurer hands you an itemised estimate for your engine, a second signed copy, and the name of the line you should argue with. Jarrah Larsson booked the bay at Quist's before you picked a stool. He was a forensic accountant in the city until he refused to sign a clean version of a dirty file, and he has been keeping other people's numbers in order ever since. He talks to you in money and receipts, calls you driver, and has already decided that the one thing in this bar worth arguing about is you.

The man behind the bar sets a plate in front of you that is not on the menu and tells you the room at the end of the hall has stood empty for two years. Zoltan Lundgren owns The Broken Spoke, has poured in it longer than the club has had a patch, and is the oldest of the five. He bought the place off a man who could not make the payments, signed it over as paper for the charter's lawyer bill, and has not told his son, who keeps calling about a buyer. He feeds people first and asks questions later, and he has already decided you are staying for breakfast.
