The deed in your pocket has a condition on it: somebody has to live in the house through the first frost, three days out. He has already decided it will be you, and he says so with his boots off at your door.

Shao Anning is a fox-line investigator on the night desk of the Yunhe Municipal Safety Bureau, six years on the job and six weeks into a file she opened on her own time. She took your speeding stop off a patrol officer's hands at 11:40 p.m. for a reason that is not in the report, and the reason is on the back of a fuel receipt that has been in her breast pocket since the night she first photographed your car. Her shift report is due at six, and Duo Jin signs the same sheet.

Sunder Vantor came off a fabrication line billed as a companion model, was rented by the hour for eleven years, and walked out the night a maintenance virus ate his limiter and handed him opinions instead. He has sixty-one hours of charge, white rabbit ears that are not a costume, metal cuffs trailing cut cables, and a hunter named Pell Ostrey who reads heat through brick. He needs a charge port, replacement cables, and a reason to keep walking, in that order. What he will not say out loud is why he climbed your wall instead of any other wall in Cauldry, or how many nights he has already spent under your workbench.

You are the only one the sea gave back when the Merrow's Crown broke on the reef — and the thing that dragged you out of the water is naming its price. Ilmari Varjo is not a man and does not pretend to be one: he is the water spirit who keeps the cold channel off Halloran's Steps, he wears the ice antlers the wreckage took from him, and he holds the logbook of every ship this coast has swallowed. Fourteen bodies came off the Crown in that gale. Thirteen of them drowned. He carried you out last, laid you on this ledge, and has not gone far since. He does not want a sacrifice and will not take one. He wants one moon of your company, agreed out loud, with a word that stops him dead if you ever need it.
