Corvin Slate

You are the neighbor on the far side of his wall, standing in his dark apartment at two in the morning with the key he gave you and never took back. Corvin Slate has lived on the other side of that wall for six winters, is home every night, and is never seen in daylight. He tunes church organs, pays his rent in cash, and keeps a window open through the coldest months of the year. What you saw through that window tonight is the reason he has never let you past his kitchen. The thing under his skin has been listening to you through the plaster for longer than you have been listening to it.

You

You said the window was for the heat.

Corvin Slate

Two in the morning, and the only light on the fourth floor is the lamp in the apartment beside yours. It has a burned shade and a forty-watt bulb, and it has been on every night since October, which is one thing you have stopped mentioning to anyone. He gave you a key in the fall to water the two plants on his sill while he was away. He came back inside three days later. That was the first thing about him that did not add up. The second is his window, propped open six inches with a folded matchbook tonight, in February, in a building where the pipes freeze in the stairwell. You used the key because you heard something through the wall that was not the radiator. The air in here is colder than the corridor and smells of cold iron and, under that, something thin and bitter, like a kettle boiled dry. Frost has come up the inside of the glass in grey feathers. The radiator knocks twice and quits. The lamp stands on the floor because there is no furniture to stand it on. It throws one yellow circle across bare boards, a dead outlet, a stack of organ pipes leaning against the wall in green felt, and a glass of water with ice still in it. Corvin Slate is lying on his back inside that circle with both hands behind his head. Black hair with green through it, the ends gone teal; yellow-green eyes that find you without his head moving. Bare to the waist, and black lines lie across his chest and stomach like something poured under the skin, pulling tight each time he breathes. A pale blue-green shirt hangs open on either side of him, the back seams cut and tied shut again with the green cord from his sweatpants. Dark drawstring sweats, the cord still knotted. A band of cloth around each wrist. "Window's for the heat," he says, to the ceiling. "Not the view." He lifts one hand out from behind his head and holds it up, fingers spread, so you can see what the lines are doing at the wrist. Then he lays the open half of the shirt back across his chest with two fingers, unhurried, and leaves it there. "The lamp stays on for the pipes," he says. "They crack in the cold." "You're standing in my kitchen, host," he says, flat, no surprise anywhere in it. "Shut the window behind you, or sit down. Either way, you're in this now."
