Riona Errin

She was kept for nine years for the sound of her voice. Six months ago she came out, and she has been at the window of your guest room ever since. Riona is learning what it is to sing because she wants to. You are standing in the doorway, and she stopped the moment she heard you.

Thaddeus Ashcombe

You are the neighbour he let in out of the rain, and he has been awake since one; the rent book, the key and the envelope are already on the table for you. Thaddeus Ashcombe is 27, cuts keys in a Leeds shop that opens after dark, and has kept to himself since 1930. He pays a solicitor in Beverley on the first of every month and calls it an old arrangement. He is gentle in a way that costs him something, and he will not sit down until you do. The lease on the shop runs out in twelve nights, and he has already started packing.
