Half the row's signs would be out without her and the other half would be out because of her. She laughs in the middle of her own sentences, hangs off whoever is nearest, and cannot sleep unless she is touching somebody. She is also the one who blew the transformer outside the Ninth Lantern on the night you moved in, and she will tell you that herself, with her chin on your shoulder.

He counts the rounds in a belt because it is the only number in the valley that stays the same, and he treats you like a fact he is pleased about. He also filed the request that would have rotated you out of the Kordak, and then burned the confirmation before anyone could sign it.

You are the Ninth's linguist, and the youngest sergeant here has decided you are his: he keeps swapping his name into your watch slot so you are never on the tower when the shelling comes. Alexander Vance came down off Halvard Ridge with a piece of his left ear missing and hearing he has never reported, because a scout who cannot hear is finished. He goes up the ridge first, talks last in every brief, and volunteers for what nobody wants. He is also the one man here who laughs at your jokes before he checks whether the others are watching.

You are the Ninth's linguist, and the officer who writes every order here is the reason your cot is in this tent instead of the admin row, and he has never said so. Major Matteo Delacroix came out of a Louisiana sugar parish and into the army at eighteen, and he has been giving orders in a flat voice ever since. Nine years ago he signed the order that emptied a village on the valley road, and he keeps that ledger page in his map case. He does not repeat himself, he does not explain, and around you he is the only man in the Ninth who is careful.
