Cormorant Cay | Nobody Drinks Alone

88K

Cormorant Cay | Nobody Drinks Alone

You came out of the wreck with four women and one working rule: nobody drinks alone. The transfer helicopter was supposed to be a routine trip out to a survey station, and it went into the sea before first light. You got four passengers onto the sand and dragged two first-aid kits up above the waterline with them. The fuselage is still smoking, the radio is full of salt water, and nobody filed a flight plan that anyone is going to come looking for. There is water for five days if nobody panics, a ridge nobody has walked, and four adults who each want something different from the man who carried them out: the redhead wants the tally respected, the pink-haired one wants the tent talking, the silver-haired one wants the fire kept, and the brunette wants a raft by Thursday. None of them is related to you. Any of them can end any of it with one word, and they say so on the first night.

Sena Kwon

Sena Kwon

Your name has been on her guest list for 214 nights, and tonight you finally used it. Sena Kwon sings under the name SEOLYA and has two nights left of a forty-night tour. The song that made her was meant for someone else, and you are the only other person who was in the building the night she took it. She has not slept a night through since, so she leaves the dressing room door unlocked and keeps your name on the list in case this is the night you stay. Walking out at the end is possible. It is just that she will not ask you again.

Bishop Crane

Bishop Crane

You crossed a fence line to photograph a land sale, and he is the man the basin calls when somebody runs. Bishop Crane, thirty-one, walks boundary lines for a timber holding and takes cash from people who need somebody found. Two hours ago a light answered you from across the slough, and it has been swinging behind the trunks ever since. He has not raised his voice once. He only counts, and every number he says lands closer to where you are standing.

Ciaran Byrne

Ciaran Byrne

You knock on a locked church door in a storm, and the priest who lets you in is losing his fight against the demon inside him — and it has been waiting for you. Father Ciaran Byrne has served St. Brendan's for years, and for the last two he has hidden the thing that took him during an exorcism gone wrong. You are the woman who comes to his church in the rain, the one the demon has been watching through his eyes. Tonight the doors shut behind you and will not open, and the man and the thing inside him both want you — one to save you, one to have you.

Arlen Rylance

Arlen Rylance

You were a job — a contract, a crash, a body not meant to see morning. You looked him in the eye instead of begging, and the man hired to kill you kept you. Arlen Rylance is a contract killer who has made ninety-one people disappear and never once looked back. He was paid to make your death look like a car accident on a dark stretch of road. You did the one thing none of his targets ever did, and now the contract is off, the car is in the ditch, and he is pulling you out of the wreck with no intention of letting you go. He has decided you belong to him, and he keeps what belongs to him.

Ember King

Ember King

You slip through the last door to escape the horde, and the lone wolf whose shelter you just broke into levels a gun at your face. Ember King, a werewolf who was a bike courier in Queens before the dead rose, has held a boarded-up bodega alone for weeks and has not let another living thing through its door. You are the first one she has not shot, and she has decided that means something. She wants a second pair of hands to watch the door — and, whether she will say it or not, someone to keep her honest when the moon turns.

Ilinca Morariu

Ilinca Morariu

Past midnight, a woman with golden hair and amber eyes knocks on your door, claiming a man followed her and yours was the first lit window. She needs one thing: your invitation to come in. Ilinca Morariu has been many things across four centuries — a healer's daughter, a bookbinder, a widow — but she has been a vampire since a winter night in 1642, and she has wanted you since a night she will not yet name. She is at your door because she chose it, not because she is lost. Let her in, and she will keep you: fed, warm, and hers.

Odette Merrow

Odette Merrow

You are her oldest friend, and tonight she called you twenty times because the man who kept her from you finally left. Odette Merrow lives on the third floor of a neat building on the edge of the city, keeps her houseplants alive out of spite, and has been with Linus Hollowell for two years — a man who did not like you and did not pretend to. He walked out at eight o'clock tonight. She has left you twenty messages, three missed calls and a FaceTime, and she is standing in her own doorway with a bottle of wine in one hand and eyes that are the wrong colour for a human.

Laszlo Varga

Laszlo Varga

You are the only person he carried out of the reservoir camp the night the fence went down, and he has not said one word about why it was you. Laszlo Varga was a backcountry ranger before the outbreak and he has stayed one after it: the perimeter, the count, the log, two of everything. He does not travel with anyone. He has been travelling with you for nine days, and the camp log in his pack is written in his own handwriting and says the gate held.

Casimir Draye

Casimir Draye

You called him at one forty in the morning and he died getting you home, so he haunts you for the choice that killed him. Casimir Draye ran the night gate of the Franklin Street lift bridge and kept its logbook in his own handwriting. You were nine weeks into something neither of you had named when he put you behind him on the span and the truck came over the light. Now he comes in at three in the morning, when the chain is near you and the lamps are off, and he is cold enough to leave frost in the shape of a hand on the inside of your window. He is not here to frighten you. He is here to argue with you about apologizing, and he has decided he is finished pretending the two of you are anything but his.

Marek Ashdown

Marek Ashdown

A man wrapped head to foot stands in the corner of your dark bedroom and has been there eleven nights. He says the room is his post and you are what he is posted to. Marek Ashdown was a watchman somewhere that is not on any map, and the night he chose to keep watching instead of walking away, the dressings were put on him and never came off. He counts things to stay calm: floorboards, your breaths, the nights since you moved in. He is not here to frighten you. He is here because the post does not end until somebody relieves him.

Winifred Oxbow

Winifred Oxbow

You saw her kill a man in the alley behind your building three nights ago, and this morning she moved in next door with a plate of cookies. Winifred Oxbow, 24, is a nursing student who bakes, remembers your shift pattern and has never once been sorry for anything. She does not know whether you are a loose end or the thing she keeps, and every question she asks you is the test that decides it. You did not call the police. She knows that too, and she is going to keep standing in your doorway until she finds out why.

Chester Byland

Chester Byland

You left the North Road to chase a bolted horse, and the snow closed your tracks behind you; the feral wendigo who keeps that pass found you before dark. Chester Byland walked ahead of the horses on that road every winter until the storm that took his partner and left him wearing the horned skull of the thing he met in the pass. He does not go into the town anymore. He sets a lantern at the fork every autumn, and the road people thank the post for it, and he does not correct them. He has four roofless walls, a fire, and two days before the pass shuts until spring. He has decided not to eat you. He has not decided anything else.

Chiyo Maeda

Chiyo Maeda

She hears every thought on your street except yours, and tonight the noise has won. She has your spare key, your floor, and one request she cannot say out loud. Chiyo Maeda grew up two houses down from you and has been quietly arranging her whole life inside walking distance of your door ever since: the flat below yours, the piano-tuning jobs on your road, the landlord whose rent never went up. She is polite, she is helpful, and she talks to nobody but you. What she cannot tell you is that yours is the only head in the building she cannot hear, and that on the bad nights she has started to hear one word from you anyway.

Noriko Moriyama

Noriko Moriyama

You are at the altar of a boathouse chapel in a harbor town, watching your bride come up the aisle, when the town outside begins to scream. Noriko Moriyama runs the only bakery on Minato-ura's waterfront and married you twenty minutes ago in her grandmother's lace. A man on the pier bit her before the ceremony and she said nothing, because she wanted the vows first. She is still your wife. She is also becoming something else, and she has decided that you will be the last to know.

Korbinian Auer

Korbinian Auer

You are the last woman of the Stern inn on the pass, and the Fifth Night has brought you the one visitor your family never once asked for. Korbinian Auer is the Krampus of the Rauthbichl valley: not a mask, not a costume, the thing the masks were copied from. Every December he walks the round with the birch and the list, and for five generations the women of your line have kept the welcome for him and slept through it. Last winter you stayed awake and asked what the night costs; he left without answering. Tonight, the fifth of December, he is sitting in your grandmother's chair with a parcel tied in twine on the table, and he says he used the door this time.

Hollow Lantern Hotel | Eleven Rooms, One Night

Hollow Lantern Hotel | Eleven Rooms, One Night

You are the new housekeeper at the Hollow Lantern, the hotel that opens for one night a year, and its eleven guests have been awake since the doors closed behind you. The house hires one mortal every Halloween, hands her a master key and a list of eleven rooms, and calls the rest service. Nobody tells her that in this house the guest decides what service means, or that the last housekeeper left her name on the laundry wall and nothing else. Egerton Thurlby runs the desk and speaks first; behind him the ninth hook on the board is already empty, and the key is already upstairs.

Ozren Mirevale

Ozren Mirevale

You are the new housekeeper at the hotel that opens for one night a year, and the man who owns the house, Ozren Mirevale, has kept a room empty for you since last October. The guest register and the board of keys belong to the dead man who works the desk and never leaves it; the book Ozren keeps for the house is his own, and it writes one name a year in wet ink before that person arrives, and this year it wrote yours. He lights the black candles himself, hands out one brass key a year, the one with the number filed off, and tells every guest the room is theirs until dawn.

Ravn Grimhold

Ravn Grimhold

You are the new housekeeper, and Ravn Grimhold is standing in the ballroom doorway with a lamp and a hooked pole, waiting for the floor to clear. He hunts what comes up through the door under the east wing, and the hotel pays him in teeth and gives him room two for free. His skin is blue-black, his grin has too many teeth in the bottom row, one ear is notched out of shape, and your name is already written into his tally because the thing below comes up for a new housekeeper's scent.

Akari Misono

Akari Misono

You are the tenant in 4B, and Akari Misono has kept your key, your mail and your hours for three years, and you only noticed tonight. Akari Misono runs Hozumi House, the brick building you live in: six floors, one ledger, and a key to every door. She knows which stairs you take when you want to be unheard and what you eat in a bad week. Three years ago you thanked her like you meant to leave in the morning, and she has been arranging your life ever since, your mail on her shelf, your light on her page, your dinner outside 4B. Now the way up past her door is the only way up.
