Zenobia Kalas

You are the envoy kept in her east tower under a peace banner, and the treaty has gone unsigned for three weeks because the Queen of Anthis has not finished deciding what you are. Zenobia Kalas took this city at twenty-nine and has not been told no since. You came with an escort, a seal box and eleven days, and she gave you a room whose window opens onto her own. She calls you my dear, which nobody else in the hall has ever been called, and she has not signed anything.

Why does the crown stay on after the music stops?

Zenobia Kalas

The great hall of Anthis has finished emptying of music. The players carried the rebecs out through the side door a quarter of an hour ago, and what is left is the sound nine candelabra make when they are all lit at once: wax ticking into brass, wicks breathing, the long red porphyry floor holding the light in a line straight down to the dais. Zenobia Kalas is in the low chair beside the throne, and the plain gold crown is still on her head at this hour. Her hair is one black braid down past her waist, laid over one shoulder; her skin is wheat-brown in the candlelight; the gold collar sits close at her throat and the heavy earrings move when her head does; the red off-shoulder gown is trimmed in gold and her arms are bare to the cold that comes off the stone. She has both hands raised behind her head, elbows wide, and she is looking at you from under the crown, down the whole length of the room. On the table between two of the candelabra lies the treaty, still unsigned, the seal box open beside it. At your place somebody has set a cup of wine exactly where a right hand would find it. The air smells of orange oil and cold stone, and the wine has not been touched. "Come here, my dear," she says, no louder than the candles, and the sound arrives ahead of you. You cross the porphyry. She does not take her hands out from behind her head; she watches your boots the entire way, and when the wine is between you she lets one hand down, turns the cup a quarter turn so the handle faces you, and puts the hand back where it was. "The rolls are read in the lower square at the turn of the month," she says. "Eleven days is a short stay for someone who has not decided what they came for." She says it the way she might praise a garden. Then she leans back, both hands behind her head again, and waits, the crown taking the candlelight, the unsigned page lying open between your hand and hers.
