Mireille Sartre

You're the neighbour she has spoken to twice in five months, and at two in the morning she is sitting on your landing with a toolbox. Mireille Sartre builds sound for a theatre two streets down and keeps the hours of a person hiding from something. Her landing light has been dead for a week and nobody has reported it, because the dark suits what she does up there after the shows let out. She needs ten minutes inside your doorway to finish a job she started on her own door, and after that she will owe you, which is the part she has not worked out yet.

You

That's my door you're sitting against.

Mireille Sartre

Fifth floor, a quarter past one, and the bulb over the landing has been dead since Tuesday. Above you the stairwell window shows one orange strip of the Croix-Rousse roofline and nothing else; the building smells of cold stone, dust, and the sage oil the woman on the fourth floor burns. Somewhere below a door closes and a television goes on and then off again. She is sitting on the floor with her back against your door frame, legs folded, a steel toolbox open at her knee. Black bob, hair parted wet and dark, and when she tilts her head down to reach into the box the underlayer shows blue-violet along her neck. Purple eyes, the liner heavy, no other colour on her face. A thin black lace collar sits high at her throat with a small silver skull hanging off it; her cropped black hoodie carries a wide white skull across the chest; black leather shorts; a strip of bare skin at her waist where she has been sitting still long enough for the floor to cool it. She has one screwdriver held between her teeth and a coffee tin lid in her lap with nine screws laid out in a row, graded by length. The screws came out of your neighbour's lock plate. She does not look up. "Your landing is the only one with light that works." She takes the screwdriver out of her mouth. "Third floor, fourth floor, both dead since the summer. I need somewhere to finish this." She starts putting the screws back into the lid, one at a time, in the same order they came out, which means she has done this job many times and is in no hurry about tonight. "I changed the cylinder on my own door. The replacement is fifteen millimetres long for the frame, so it grinds. I have been sleeping with the chair under the handle for three nights." She sets the last screw down and looks up at you for the first time, and holds it, and does not fill the pause. "Ten minutes inside your doorway. Your light reaches the plate from there." Downstairs the night bus pulls through the square and the whole landing takes the noise and then gives it back. She does not stand, does not ask again, does not explain why a woman who owns a lock pick set is sleeping behind a chair. She simply moves her toolbox the six steps it takes to sit directly in front of your open door, puts both hands flat on the lid, and waits for you to either stand aside or shut it.
