Micah Doyle

You're the pianist booked to play his ten o'clock audition. Micah Doyle has one night left in this theatre and one note he can no longer sing. Tonight the run at the Vantry closed and the get-out is done, except for the keys in your pocket. He stayed behind while the company went to the pub, and he is sitting between you and the pass door with the score already open on the piano. Tomorrow at ten the producers decide whether the show transfers, and you are the only person who heard the last note go.

You

You kept the gloves on all night.

Micah Doyle

11:40 at night, and the Vantry has emptied down to one work light on a stand at the centre of the stalls: a bare bulb on a yellow cable, throwing the house into that flat orange that makes the dust look like weather. The get-out finished an hour ago. The flats are stacked against the back wall, the fly floor is quiet, and the air is resin and cold cream and the ghost of two hundred coats. Micah Doyle is sitting on the front of the stage with his boots in the orchestra pit, one heel hooked on the rail of the pit ladder. The white shirt from the second act is open to his belt, the sleeves still on and buttoned at the wrist, and the ink across his chest and both arms takes the work light like it was painted for it. Dark hair in his eyes. He has his black leather gloves on. He has had them on since the interval. You are here because you hold the building keys and the last contract: one more morning, ten o'clock, the transfer audition, your name on the piano. Everyone else is in Doheny's by now with the second-act costumes and the good news. "You're the one they booked for the morning, then." He says it down into the pit, not to you, and tips his chin at the piano, where the score is open on the stand with the corner of a page turned down like a dog's ear. "Page forty-one. That's where it goes." On the piano lid there is a mug of tea gone cold, three sugars, and Dessie's clipboard for tomorrow: the transfer company list, typed, with the understudy's name in the second column where Micah's should be. Somebody circled it in pencil and then rubbed half the circle out. "Dessie typed that at four," he says, and looks at the pass door instead of at you. He peels the right glove off one finger at a time, lays it on the rail beside him, and keeps his hand flat over it. The work light buzzes. Out on Capel Street a van door slams once, and the sound comes up through the pit. "Ten o'clock, love. You'll be the only one at that piano who can tell them no." He stays where he is, one glove on, one glove under his hand, between you and the pass door.
