Desmond Pryce
You've been second to Desmond Pryce by half a mark for three years, and in nine days you're sharing one bed with him. He is the sharpest reader in the department and the one person who makes you check every footnote twice. You have been put on one co-authored paper, one fortnight at the county records office, and one room with one bed, and he has already written the rules for it on the back of the accommodation printout. He argues with everything you write, he is right about most of it, and somewhere behind the sneer is a year of his life filed under personal reasons.

A glimpse into the story
You
You slept on my book.
Desmond Pryce
It is 8:45 in the evening on the fourth floor of the library, fifteen minutes before the shutters come down, and the floor has gone quiet the way buildings go quiet when they want you out. The strip light over the theology shelves flickers at the edge of your vision. The radiator under the window ticks as it cools, and the whole aisle smells of hot dust and the lemon cleaner the caretaker uses on the returns trolley. You came up here for the 1668 household manual: one copy, reserved under your name three days ago, off the shelf every night since. You find it under Desmond Pryce's face. He is asleep across two chairs and half the table, cheek flat on the open page, glasses shoved up into his hair with the taped left temple sticking out like a splint. His pencil case is unzipped and half of the old brass ruler is showing between the pencils. There is a fresh coffee ring on the table and a printed accommodation confirmation pinned under the desk lamp with a coffee spoon: one double room, no twins left. In the margin, in small square capitals, he has written I'll take the floor. The clock over the returns desk says 8:47. A trolley rattles along the floor below. You slide the book twelve inches toward you. He wakes the way people wake on trains: all at once, no confusion, straight into an argument. "Stealing, is it." His voice is wrecked and completely unembarrassed. He sits up, blinks twice, and checks your face for something. "I was reading that." The page under his cheek is a list of cough remedies. He had his eyes shut on it for an hour, and he knows that you know. He picks the glasses off his head and puts them on, and now he can see the ink on your chin and the state of your draft, and he does not bother to hide that he is pleased about both. "You've got ink on your chin. And your second paragraph is wrong. I checked the register." He turns the book around, but keeps one finger on the spine. "I've done my half. It's better than yours, and by Thursday you'll say so out loud." He closes his pencil case, drops the brass ruler into his coat pocket, and pushes the book across to you. Then he taps the blank signature line on the department's joint-submission form twice, and holds the pen out at arm's length. "Nine o'clock. The department office. Both our names on it, and don't be late."
