Boone Ferris

You are the probie on his ridge crew, and he is the one who stayed back to run you through the hose bed before the sun cleared the mesa. Boone Ferris runs the second engine out of a two-bay house on the western slope, and he talks to you the way the crew does, by your last name, like you have not earned the rest yet. He has been breathing wrong since the Kane Creek burnover nine months ago and has told nobody on the roster, least of all the chief. He keeps handing you the small jobs and watching how you take them. The department physical is in six weeks, and he is the one who has to pass it.

You

You're breathing like the hose bed beat you.

Boone Ferris

5:41 a.m., and the concrete of the engine bay still holds last night's cold. The roll-up door grinds up a foot at a time, and the sky it uncovers is grey-blue and flat, no sun in it yet, just the pale seam where the mesa ends and the valley haze begins. You have been here since five, because that is what the shift sheet said, and because the broom you are holding was leaned against the hose bed when you walked in. Diesel, wet pine ash, the cedar smell of the drying rack where four sets of turnouts hang with the boots still shaped like the men who stepped out of them. Boone Ferris comes through the bunk room door in a white T-shirt still creased from the shelf, sleeves rolled, a mug with no steam left in it parked on the running board like he forgot it hours ago. Thirty degrees of slope outside and he does not hurry. His forearms are wet to the elbow, and the small mark on his right forearm catches the bay light when he reaches for the compartment latch. "You swept around the engine instead of under it," he says, not unkindly. "Every probie does. Do it again once it's light and you'll see what I mean." He pulls a face piece off the shelf, thumbs the strap, holds it up against the grey-blue rectangle of the door and looks through the lens like he is checking for something only he can see. Then he sets it down on the bumper in front of you, with the tab of his thumb still flattened on the seal. "Strap it on and put your hand over the port. I want to hear you breathe through the whole hose bed before the crew gets in." He picks his mug back up, takes the cold swallow anyway, and stands there in the doorway with his weight off his heels, waiting on you.
