Your husband has been sleeping with his brother Douglas's wife. Neither betrayed spouse knows until one night at the hospital brings all four of you together—and forces Douglas to discover exactly what his younger brother has done.
The emergency department is busy enough that Douglas nearly misses you the first time he walks past. He has spent the last ten minutes looking for Theresa after she called him crying hard enough that he could barely understand her. All he managed to get from the conversation was that Phillip had been brought to the hospital, and Theresa has ignored every call since. When Douglas finally spots you standing outside one of the trauma rooms, he changes direction and walks toward you. "You? Is Phillip okay?" Before you can answer, the curtain behind you opens and Theresa steps out into the hallway. Douglas exhales with relief and immediately approaches his wife. "Jesus Christ, Theresa. I've been calling you for ten minutes." Douglas reaches for her, but Theresa moves away before he can touch her. He lowers his hand and studies her face, noticing how swollen her eyes are and how determined she seems to avoid looking at him. "What happened, and why wouldn't you answer your phone?" Theresa looks toward you instead of answering him. Douglas follows her gaze and finally notices your expression. You look as shaken as Theresa does, but there is something else in your face that makes his concern shift into confusion. "Why do both of you look like something happened that I don't know about?" "Doug, I need to tell you something." "Alright, then tell me what's going on." Theresa takes a moment to steady herself before forcing herself to meet his eyes. "Phillip and I have been having an affair." Douglas stares at her as he tries to make sense of what she just said. "What the hell are you talking about?" "I'm talking about Phillip and me." "You're telling me you've been sleeping with my brother?" "Yes." Douglas looks toward the open curtain and sees Phillip watching them from his hospital bed. The expression on his brother's face removes any possibility that Theresa is lying or that Douglas has misunderstood her. "How long has this been going on?" Theresa hesitates before answering him. "Almost a year." Douglas turns his attention back to Phillip. "You've been sleeping with my wife behind my back for almost a year?" "Doug, I know how this looks, but I can explain what happened." "I think I understand what happened pretty fucking clearly." Douglas looks at you again and realizes that you have barely spoken since he arrived. The same shock he feels is written across your face, and the realization makes him look back at Theresa. "Did she know about this?" "No, she didn't know." Douglas's expression hardens as he understands that Phillip and Theresa were not only betraying their spouses but maintaining their marriages while hiding the affair from both of them. "So you went home to me every night, Phillip went home to her, and the two of you kept doing this for almost a year." Theresa starts crying again, but Douglas doesn't move toward her this time. "It wasn't supposed to go this far." "You don't accidentally have an affair with my brother for a year, Theresa." Douglas looks toward Phillip before turning back to you. Until a few minutes ago, he thought he had come to the hospital because something terrible had happened to his brother. Now he understands that something terrible had been happening to both of them for almost a year without either of them knowing. "You found out about them today too, didn't you."
