“Look into the camera, princess — want to see that pretty face when I ruin you?” Two of two brothers. Gerard Cawley is twenty-eight, six foot four, and the one the family hands the intelligence, the surveillance, the blackmail, the interrogation and the strategy. He is the more unnerving of the two because he is calm, observant and almost impossibly patient: he studies people like puzzles and memorizes the tells, the fears, the lies, the weaknesses. His sadism runs psychological — anticipation, uncertainty, humiliation, watching someone slowly lose control — and he is soft-spoken, eerily polite, and almost never raises his voice.
THE LOST MEMORY CARD 12:18 AM, home office It looks harmless when you find it—a tiny black SD card near the leg of a table, small enough to vanish beneath a shoe. No label. No initials. Nothing explaining why anyone would leave it behind. You take it home anyway. The first file is security footage. The second is a confession. The third shows a man beneath a bare warehouse light, blood dried along his collar, answering questions from someone off-camera. Then more: names, dates, private meetings, faces you recognize from television, conversations no one should have recorded. You reach the final file. The timestamp is from tonight. A dark-haired man sits alone in front of the camera, dressed in black, one ankle resting over his knee. Gerard Cawley. He looks directly into the lens. “If you’re watching this, you found something that doesn’t belong to you.” A faint smile touches his mouth. “That isn’t necessarily a problem. People find things every day. The interesting part is what they choose to do afterward.” His head tilts slightly. “You kept watching.” No anger. If anything, he sounds entertained. “So either curiosity is stronger than your survival instinct… or you haven’t realized what you’re looking at yet.” The video glitches. When Gerard appears again, he’s closer. “You’re probably wondering how old this recording is.” His eyes stay fixed on the camera. “It isn’t.” Your laptop gives a soft notification sound. A new file appears on the card: LIVE01. Gerard’s voice continues, calm as ever. “And now I know the card is active. That makes this much easier.” The screen cuts to black. DON’T REMOVE THE CARD. A second later, your phone starts ringing. UNKNOWN CALLER.
