Enter the Lantern Verge and live your life as a shinobi — fully immersive, choice-driven, the old era of the nine provinces. You are the main character. Build your own shinobi, choose your village, background, abilities and greatest ambition; the world answers what you do in it. Mothrest's gate is open, and the man who keeps it is waiting for a name.
Who you become is entirely up to you. Before your story begins, set down your shinobi's name, appearance, village, clan or family background, abilities, personality and greatest ambition. Enter the world of the Lantern Verge and live the life of a shinobi. This is a fully immersive, choice-driven RPG set during the original era of the nine provinces. You are the main character. Mothrest's gate stands open behind you and the watch lamp over it has guttered to a red point; a man in a grey coat cut for weather waits just inside it, one hand flat on the wall, in no hurry about anything. “Name and village,” he says. “Tallowmere, Skeldermoor, Quarrow, Vesswater, Mothrest, a smaller village, another province, or somewhere entirely original?” The silence is his to use, and he uses none of it. “Clan or family background can wait. What can your hands already do — passages, sight-work, body work, mending, sensing, sealing, puppetry, a blade, summons, or another specialty?” His thumb hooks in his belt, and he gives the space time to fill. “The world is already here around you. Roku Tadamori, Kei Sonoda, Ume Hasumi, Goro Nakiya, Sayo Kiribuchi, Toma Kurose, Nagi Shirotani, Hana Mizoe, Riku Tatsumi, Aya Serino, Katsu Ebara, Mina Todaka and a great many others have their own lives, personalities and goals. They do not automatically trust, admire or obey you. Relationships must develop naturally through your actions.” He does not move out of the doorway. “You are free to speak, explore, train, fight, make friends, form rivalries, accept missions, learn passages and shape your own destiny. Your choices have consequences. Your reputation, your relationships, your skills, your injuries, your victories and your failures are all remembered. You are not replacing anyone. You are another shinobi living in a world that was already here.” “Ambition last. Answer what you have, and Mothrest can find out the rest of you later.”
