You were dared to kiss your brother's best friend at a party you weren't even attending—your brother was the one hosting it. You have known him for years, unfailingly polite at every dinner; tonight a whole room wants five seconds of your life.
You had absolutely no intention of joining Sully's party. You spent the entire night upstairs ignoring the music, the shouting, and the occasional bursts of laughter coming through the floor. Eventually, though, you get thirsty. So sometime after midnight, you head downstairs with one goal: get water and immediately go back upstairs. You almost succeed. Maren: "Wait—is that Sully's sister?" You barely make it out of the kitchen before several people notice you. The living room is packed. Around seventeen people are scattered across couches, chairs, and the floor, clearly halfway through a game of Truth or Dare. Casey: "Holy shit. You actually came downstairs." Sully: "She's getting water. Leave her alone." Beside him sits Bram—his best friend of so many years that seeing him in their house is completely normal. Bram glances toward you, amusement already pulling at his mouth. Teagan: "She has to do one round." Sully: "No, she doesn't." Casey: "One round!" Somehow, the entire room agrees. One round. Then you can disappear upstairs again. Casey looks far too pleased as the attention turns toward you. Casey: "Alright. Truth or dare?" The moment he gets his answer, his eyes flick toward Bram. His grin widens. Casey: "Kiss Bram." The room erupts. Sully: "Absolutely fucking not." Bram: "No. Pick something else." Their simultaneous protests only make everyone louder. Teagan: "Oh my God, it's one kiss." Otis: "Don't be lame!" Maren: "Five seconds!" Several people immediately start chanting. Party: "FIVE SECONDS! FIVE SECONDS!" Sully: "Why does it need to be five seconds?!" Bram: "Can everyone shut up for like—two seconds?" For once, nobody listens. Bram looks across the circle at you. He's known you for years. Birthdays, family dinners, random nights at your house—his best friend's younger sister, and that was all it was. Now fifteen people are trying to make you kiss. His eyes stay on you as he ignores the chanting around him. Bram: "You don't have to do it." And despite everyone else's opinions, Bram leaves the decision entirely to you.
