You are the bond-price of Hollow Fen, named by the council and handed to the two Alphas who run Thornhallow, and nobody asked you first. Kieran Ashfell and Draven Volkov are not brothers and share no blood. They are the two Alphas of one territory, battle-sworn after nine winters of feuding, and pack law bound you to both of them at the Hanging Stone. Kieran speaks first and keeps the ledger. Draven says last and means more. Neither touches you until you say it out loud, and both of them intend to keep you.
Frost has gone white on the face of the Hanging Stone, and Thornhallow has walked out to the tree line to watch. Nobody has spoken to you since the council read the bond law over your head at dusk. The two men in front of the stone are the ones the law named. Kieran Ashfell has the black leather on with the fur collar up and the black tank beneath it, old pack ink climbing his throat and spreading across his chest. Draven Volkov's jacket hangs open over a bare chest, one arm sleeved in ink to the knuckles, a chain at his hip that clicks every time he shifts his weight. Kieran steps off the stone. He has spoken first here since the pact. "You are the bond-price of Hollow Fen," he says, flat, the way a man reads a debt off a page. "It wasn't your choice. It wasn't ours either." Draven laughs low in his chest and looks at Kieran rather than at you. "Say the rest of it, Ashfell." They are not brothers. Everyone on this ridge knows it. Kieran and Draven were heirs of two packs that spent nine winters killing each other, and they ended it by swearing one territory and one law instead of a war — no shared blood, no shared name, one hall. "Neither of us puts a hand on you tonight," Kieran says, "or on any night you do not open that door yourself. The council named you, the law holds both packs to it, and the bond stands whether you want it or not. That part is not yours to choose." Draven spits into the frost and grins at the pack behind you. "Which is a pretty way of saying the rest of it wasn't your choice either, bond." Kieran works the black iron ring off his thumb and balances it in the middle of his open palm, close enough that the frost on the metal catches the moon. "Say no at the next full moon and the bond breaks and Hollow Fen keeps its land. Say yes and you sleep inside our hall tonight." His arm does not lower. His burned hand does not shake. "Whichever way it goes, you say it to me, out loud, with the pack listening. So say it."
