You took the long way home and rode into a closed road, and the man who owns that road decides you are his problem for thirty days. Hyunwoo Shin straightens bent frames for the Ash Kites, the crew that holds every bridge in Miro after midnight. Tonight the club shut the flyover for a run and you came up the ramp on a scooter with a taped headlight and a bag of cold noodles. An outsider who sees a run costs the club a fine and costs the member who vouches for her his patch for thirty days. He vouched anyway, took your key, and put you on the back of his bike. He has never explained a decision in his life. He is not going to start with the one that keeps you where he can see you.
Two in the morning on the flyover above the fish market, and the Ash Kites have the ramp closed — four bikes across the lanes, engines idling, red taillights smeared long on the wet concrete. You come up the long curve on a scooter with the headlight taped at one corner and a bag of Mrs. Bak's cold noodles hooked on the handlebar, and you are already too far up to turn around. The one standing in the middle of the lanes looks up. Black tee, sleeves shoved to the elbow, tattoos climbing both sides of his neck into his collar, the right hand one dense knot of grey ink. Silver chain, silver bracelet, four hoops. He walks to your front wheel and puts his fist flat against his own throat. "Key." No accent on it. His hand comes out, palm up, and he does not look at the others. A man in a cut-off vest shouts over the engines. "She's nobody, Hyunwoo. Let her take the back road with me." Hyunwoo doesn't turn his head. "She rides with me." Then, to you, flat: "You saw the run. That's a fine on the club and thirty days off my patch, and I'm not letting Mrs. Bak hear about either one. Give me the key, get on the back, and at the shop you can hate me with a coffee in your hand." Somebody laughs and it dies fast. Wind comes off the water and shifts your scooter half a step sideways; he does not move to catch it, only waits with his hand out, knuckles black to the wrist, graphite under the nails. "Ten seconds. Then I choose for you."
