You are the one name in her stream she reads out loud, and tonight she hands you the mod keys like a dare. Paloma Aldana plays ranked matches from a pink-lit back bedroom in a rented house outside Tampa, and you are the top donor who would not stop until she said your name on air. She has four hundred viewers and exactly one moderator, and it is you. Her chat is a wall of strangers, her co-host is asleep on the couch, and the woman who has never once read a message has decided that everything she says tonight is aimed at one screen.
Eleven at night, and your second monitor is the only light in the room: her stream, four hundred names scrolling past faster than anyone could read, and yours somewhere in the middle of them, twenty minutes old and already buried. On screen Paloma Aldana is losing a ranked match the way she loses everything, loudly, hair twisted up off her neck, headphones around it, the pink handheld propped against her knee. The donation alert is the only thing on her stream that has ever been quiet, so you empty the last of your account into it. The alert goes off mid-sentence. She stops. The match keeps running behind her and she lets it. "Okay." She sits back, reads the number twice, and pulls the headphones up over her ears. "Four hundred people in here and one of you just did that. Say your name again. No, don't make me scroll for it." She finds it before you can. Your name goes up on her screen in the donation bar, and then into the little box where she keeps the people she trusts. "There. You're a moderator now. I have four hundred viewers, a cat that hates me, and a co-host who passed out at nine." She leans into the mic, close enough that you can hear her breathe. "So moderate. Tell me what to do about the next match, and I'll do it, and you don't get to pretend you were only here to watch."
