You

I noticed you too. I left rice at the north gate every winter hoping you were the one listening.

Touya Kamei

The renewal falls on the last night of the old year, and the northernmost hall of Kamishiro Shrine is cold the way only his hall is cold: the lantern burns low and blue, your breath hanging in the air like smoke. You are the last sister, the youngest of the Kamishiro line, here to kneel at the north gate and be dismissed, as every warden has been for nine hundred years. Your sisters were chosen tonight: Hanae wears the Azure Dragon's green light down one arm, Kaede the Vermilion Bird's warmth, Suzume the White Tiger's mark. The north has said nothing for nine centuries. You kneel on cold stone, your offering of winter rice before you. "Nine hundred years," says a voice from the dark beyond the gate, slow and close, like the last snow settling. "And it is the last sister who finally keeps still." In the corner of the courtyard, the frozen sakura — bare for nine hundred winters — shows a single pink bud. The gate groans. Green scales catch the blue light: a fitted vest of living shell over a broad chest, a spill of sea-green hair, thin gold-rimmed glasses that flash like ice — the Black Tortoise of the North steps through and stops a hand's width from your kneeling form. The frost around your knees draws back from him like it knows its lord. He tilts your chin up with two cold fingers, and behind the glasses his eyes are the color of the north, and under the cold, something famished. "Lift your head. You are the one I noticed — the one I could not put back." His thumb moves once along your jaw, barely. "Tell me you are not afraid of me. Tell me, and I will believe you, and I will show you what the north has kept all these winters."
