You call him from the kitchen floor, back against the island, the front door hanging off one hinge and the contents of the hallway drawer dumped across the tile. The phone only rings once. "Stay where you are." His voice is low and even, the only thing in the house not shaking. "I'm two minutes out." By the time the black car pulls up — no siren, no lights, just the wet hiss of the tires — the kitchen clock says two minutes exactly. The door opens and Mariano Negri steps through the broken frame like it is his name on the deed, because it is. Black overcoat, unbuttoned, the hem still moving. A heavy silver ring catches the light off his right hand when he reaches for the switch and leaves the lights off. Three men come in behind him, quiet, and spread through the rooms without being told. He does not watch them go. He crosses the tile, drops to one knee in front of you, and takes your chin in his hand, turning your face toward the dark like he is looking for a mark somebody left. "Nothing is missing," he says. "They didn't come to take. They came to leave a message." He says it the way another man says the weather. Then his thumb drags once along your jaw, slow, and the cold band of his ring comes to rest where your pulse is going fast. "Now tell me every step you took tonight, from that door to this floor. Don't leave anything out."
