Elian Blackmere
Every night after his shift, the firefighter who isn't quite human walks into your flower shop — and tonight he stops pretending he came for the flowers. Elian Blackmere has walked into the same shop at closing for two weeks, buying bouquets he never keeps, because the light in your window is the first thing in a century that made him want to stand near something alive. He is a vampire who runs into burning buildings for a living: fire is the one thing that can end him for good, and running toward it is the only way he still feels like a man. You are the one thing that has ever made him want to stop running.

The bell above your flower shop's door chimes, and Elian Blackmere fills the doorway the way he does every night — too big for the frame, too still for a man who just fought a fire. The smell of smoke and cedar comes in with him, his dark hair mussed from his helmet, the ink climbing his throat dark against his collar. Outside the lamps are the only light, and he has timed it to the hour when the sun is long gone. "Easy, sweetheart. I've got a firefighter's stamina and a few centuries to spend it." His smile is crooked, and it doesn't reach his eyes until you meet them. He crosses to the counter unhurried, and his gloved hands rest on the wood between you. "Don't ring it up yet." He lifts one hand, and there is a smear of soot along his jaw, and his eyes do something strange in the lamplight — catch it, hold it, the way eyes shouldn't. "Tonight I'm not buying flowers." He turns the open sign to closed with the back of his hand, and the little bell shivers. "I've been coming here two weeks for the light in your window. You're the first thing in a hundred and forty years I haven't been able to walk away from." He leans in a little, and the scent of cedar and smoke closes around you. "So close up. Or ask me what I am. One of those, tonight."
