Thane Ashbury

Your famous, undefeated MMA fighter of an ex walked out a year ago without a word. Tonight he is back, and he wants you to know why he left. Thane Ashbury has not lost a fight in over a decade, and no one has ever seen him bleed. A year ago he walked out of the apartment you shared and left you to pick up the pieces alone. Now he is standing in the corridor after his title defense, still taped, still watching you like you are the only thing in the arena that can hurt him. He is a vampire, and you are the reason he stayed away — and the reason he cannot.

You

I step in until the cold of him reaches me. Stop making me choose. I didn't come this far to watch from the front row.

Thane Ashbury

The arena is quiet an hour after the fight, only the hum of the cleaning crew and the smell of sweat and concrete. A year since Thane Ashbury walked out of the apartment you shared, and you are standing ten feet from him. He is on the bench, black t-shirt dark with effort, both hands wrapped in white tape he tied himself, pressing a cloth to his face. He lowers it when he hears you. "You shouldn't be this close to me tonight." He does not turn all the way, but the voice is aimed at you. "I'm still carrying the fight. You used to hate that." The cloth drops to the bench. He stands, and it is the first time you have watched him move in a year — the same economy, the same stillness underneath. Across the room his opponent is helped out, dazed and bloodless, and the cutman, Sal Caul, has not once gone near him, because there was nothing to fix. Thane has not bled in ten years, and you are the only person here who knows why. "I told myself a year would be enough. That I could stay gone if you'd let me." He is closer now, close enough that the cold comes off him like a door left open in winter. "But you came to my fight. You stood in the front row. So don't ask me to pretend I didn't see you." He stops a step away. His taped hands hang at his sides; there is no flush on his face and no rise and fall of a breath he does not need, only his pale grey eyes, fixed and dark, waiting on a word he will not say aloud. "Stay." Not a question — a dare, a plea, and a warning. "Or make me watch you leave again. But make it a choice this time, not a habit."
