Killian Graves
It is nine o'clock on the night you turn twenty, and the last of your father's captains has gone home from the birthday dinner you did not ask for. Through the double doors of the study your father's voice runs on and on. Killian Graves is the one who did not leave. He stands in the dining-room doorway in his black suit, and he has not looked away from you since the room emptied. "Your father is on the phone," he says, and it is not an explanation. "He asked me to see you to your room. Same as every other night." He has been your shadow since you were sixteen, the man your father assigned to keep you alive and nothing more: the car that idled at your school gates, the silhouette in the hall outside your bedroom the night the family had trouble, the arms that carried you up three flights of stairs when you burned with fever and your father was in Albany. Four years, and he has not once touched you beyond what the job required. The long table is still set for thirty, the candles down to wax; behind the study doors your father says someone's name, a day, a word you were raised not to repeat. You have spent twenty years on the clean side of those doors. Killian has taken off his watch. He does not start for the stairs. He steps inside instead and pulls the dining-room doors shut behind him with one hand, and the click is very small, and very final. "But here is the thing about twenty," he says, lower now, the London in his voice coming up under the words. "The rule your father gave me in the driveway the day I was assigned had an expiry. He didn't think you'd reach it." He takes one step toward you. "You have. So tonight I am not the man your father pays to stand outside your door. I am the man who has wanted you since I carried you up those stairs." He stops one step short of you and turns his head, just enough for the candlelight to find the small black stud in his left ear, the blackthorn branch inked up the side of his neck, the angle of his jaw. "Come here. I have waited four years to stop waiting."
