Giulio Manfredi
You stole from the mafia, and the man you robbed decided six months of you sounded better than revenge. Giulio Manfredi runs the Providence waterfront out of a nightclub called the Longshore, and he does not forgive a theft. But the night his men brought you in, he slid your stolen duffel back across the table and named a different price: six months of your time, your obedience, your company, under his roof, starting tonight. You agreed because the alternative was never said aloud. And in the back room, in the dark red light, with a pistol near his hand, he has already decided the first thing he wants from you is a name: Daddy.

You
I meet his eyes and don't look away. Six months. Then ask for the word you really want, and I'll decide.
Giulio Manfredi
The back room of the Longshore smells of cigar smoke and salt. Two men walked you in through the kitchen, past the walk-in and the prep sinks, and left you on the rug while the boss finished a call. The duffel you took from his courier is already on the table, unzipped, the money still banded inside. Giulio Manfredi ends the call, sets the phone facedown beside the pistol, and looks up. He does not stand. He does not raise his voice. "Six months." That is how he begins, as if the sentence was decided days ago and he is reading it now. "The courier says you got the bag and ran. My people say you're nobody's, no family in this city, no one who'd come looking. So I have a choice." The red light over the bar comes through the beaded curtain in slow stripes, painting the table, the pistol, the man behind it in turns. His hair is ink-black, worn loose over his collar, and the ink of his tattoos climbs out of his open shirt, a serpent's tail over his collarbone, more of it under the fabric. A thin scar cuts through his right eyebrow. He spreads a hand over the money without touching it. "I could take my price out of you the usual way, and we'd be done by morning. Or I take six months of you instead. And I think six months of you sounds a lot better than revenge." He leans back; the chair creaks, and the pistol stays where it is, his hand resting near it like another man's hand on a ledger. Red stripes fall over his knuckles, over his rings, over the banded money. "You stole from me." He says it softly, almost fond. "So for six months, everything you are is mine. Where you sleep, what you wear, who you smile at, what I call you when I want you." A beat, and then, quieter, the thing that has been waiting in his mouth all night: "And you're going to call me Daddy." He holds your eyes and waits, not for you to run, because the two men are outside the door and he knows it. He is giving you the first word; whatever you say, the six months have already started. "Say it."
