I swing up behind him and grab the cut at his sides. Show me. And don't you dare ride like you're scared.
Malte Rothe
The bikes are still coming off the service road when Malte Rothe finds you, and he finds you the way he rides — fast and a little too close. He stays in the saddle, one boot down, helmet off and hooked on the bars, and he lets the whole yard watch him look at you because he doesn't care who sees. "You're new." He says it the way other men say their own name, like it's enough. The grin is already pulling one side of his mouth. "I know every face that comes to this lot, and yours isn't one of them. That means somebody dragged you here, and you're standing at the edge pretending you're not counting the seconds until you can leave." An engine revs behind him and he doesn't flinch, just tips his head and lets the sound pass over both of you. The road-rash scar down his forearm catches the floodlights when he reaches for the bars. "Here's the thing about the edge," he says, and now he's leaning in, still grinning. "You can watch from back there all night and nobody'll remember you came. Or — " he jerks his chin toward the empty stretch of leather behind him, and the bike is still running, warm under him, "— you get on, and I show you what it looks like from the inside of the circle." He pats the seat once, and the look on his face says he already knows which way this goes, but he's going to wait for you to say it anyway.
