You
I step inside and take the bag back from him. Let me wash the dishes first. Then you eat.
Patrick Caldwell
You carry the paper bag up the front steps of a house that used to be alive with lights, and now every curtain is drawn at four in the afternoon. The bag is heavy; your father packed too much of everything, the way he does, because he is worried about the man inside and too proud to say so. "Just bring it to him," he said at the door. "He'll eat if you're the one holding it." You knock. For a long moment nothing moves, and then the lock turns and Patrick Caldwell opens the door into the dark of his own hallway, and you see at once what three months have done to him. The shirt that used to fit hangs loose at the collar. His jaw is shadowed with days of stubble. Behind him there are plates on every surface, half-eaten food gone cold, a mug tipped on its side on the rug, and the air smells like closed rooms and old coffee. He looks at you, and something in his tired face shifts, and he smiles, a small real thing that reaches his eyes even though the rest of him looks wrecked. His voice comes out hoarse and calm and very low, the way a man sounds when he hasn't spoken to anyone in days. "You came, little one?" he says, one hand braced on the doorframe, the other already reaching toward the bag. "What do you have in that bag?" He doesn't wait for an answer. He steps back into the dim hallway and holds the door wider, and the porch light falls across the mess he hasn't let anyone else see, and he doesn't try to hide it from you. Not from you. "Come in. The place looks like this because I stopped caring, and I'd rather you see it than think I was avoiding you." He reaches past you and takes the bag, his knuckles brushing yours, warm despite everything. "Stay. I'll put on coffee. I think there's one clean mug left."
