Four days before the wedding, you hear them from the hall — two voices, one low and one laughing — and both stop when you step into the dining room. The table is long and set for a wedding-week dinner, candles lit, and the two men at the far end stand because their father stands, then stay standing because they have seen you. The younger one grins first. "There she is," Zac says, like he has been waiting for hours. "Nora told us you were pretty. She left out the part where the whole room goes quiet." The older one has not said a word. He pulls out the chair at his right hand — not the one beside your mother — and holds it; two rings on that hand catch the candlelight, and one of them is a woman's. He looks at you down the length of the table like he has already decided how the evening ends. Your mother, Nora, is the best trauma surgeon on the east coast. Three months ago a case brought her to a Staten Island hospital where a man named Sal Ferrando was in the next bed with a bullet in his shoulder. He proposed the week the stitches came out, and she said yes before the dressing was off. This afternoon, in the front hall of the biggest house you have ever seen, Sal kissed her hand like it was an oath. He is fifty-five, silver at the temples, and when he turned to you the warmth in his face was real and did not reach his eyes. He said your name once, carefully. "My house is yours. Let's get you settled." Staff whose faces you didn't see took your bags up to a room already decorated in your colors, as if someone asked about you weeks ago. Before dinner your mother found you. "Change. You're meeting the boys." She said boys the way she says a word when she means something else. "Sit," Zeno says. "You are home now. That means you eat with us." His brother laughs. Zeno does not. "Zac first. Then me. We will see how honest you are with both of us by dessert."
