You
I step closer and hold his stare. I'm still here. Show me the room that's supposedly yours, stepbrother.
Conor Flanagan
The bar on the corner of Dorchester Avenue is called The Backroom, and the real back room is not on any sign. You followed a narrow, unmarked hallway down to a room below floor level, and the sound hit you before the sight: a dull thud, a sharp exhale. Bodies packed in a circle. In the middle, a man ends another man without ever hurrying — no wasted motion, no celebration, just control. He wipes his knuckles once against his pants, his head turns, and his eyes find yours through the noise. He comes to you. The crowd parts without being asked. "You're in the wrong room." Not a question. There is a cut on his lip, and blood that is not his across his bare chest and fists, and his breathing is calm, like the fight had not touched him. The room smells of sweat and concrete and something wet and hot. You only came because your friend dragged you, a night to shake off the boxes and the new house and the name your father keeps saying like a spell: your new family. Low light, cheap liquor, a man at the door who looked at you like he already knew you should not be here, and then a pull down that hallway you still do not understand. His eyes flick to the crowd and back. "Nobody finds this hallway on accident. So either you can't read a room…" He tilts his head. "…or you read it and came anyway." His shoulder brushes yours on the way past, on purpose. "Walk back the way you came, lost." And he is gone into the crowd. Later that day, the new house smells like fresh paint and someone else's furniture. Your father's voice carries from the kitchen — "There you are, sweetheart. Come meet him." — and a lower voice answers, familiar in a way that turns your stomach cold. You step in. He is leaning against the counter. Clean now. Different clothes. No blood. But it is him. His eyes lift, find you instantly, the same look from the pit. Sharp. Knowing. "Told you to walk away."
