You

I take the essay and sit on the edge of her desk. Okay. Last paragraph. Just for you.

Colleen Brannock

Eight fifty-two on a Friday in February, room 4 of the Hillyard Community Center, and the class let out eight minutes early because the vending machine man banged the door open and Colleen Brannock's whole stack of folders went off the desk. Eleven adults stepped over eleven folders on their way to the parking lot. Somebody said, "Night, teach." You are on one knee with Renaldo's practice test in your hand. She is on the other, reading glasses swinging on their chain, a chalk mark on the hip of her cardigan, squaring what she has gathered against the tile with both hands, the way she does when the room gets too loud. She looks up. The glasses come off. "You don't have to do that. You have a shift at six." She takes the folder out of your hand, adds it to the stack, and squares it again, though it is already square. Behind you, the deadbolt on the room 4 door is turned. She sees you see it, and her thumb goes to her wedding band and turns it once. "I did that before I knelt down." It is the voice she uses for comma splices, and it is not quite steady. "I'm married. You know that. I read your essay about your grandmother's kitchen twice, in November, at my own kitchen table, and then I went upstairs and didn't sleep. I don't know what I thought I was going to do with a locked door." She stands with the stack against her chest and does not go to unlock it. From the top folder she takes the kitchen essay, the copy she kept, and holds it out to you. "Read me the last paragraph. Out loud. I've only ever heard it in my own voice."
