You
I take the chair and the drink. Schuette's way. Alright, Trish, I'll keep you company till two.
Trish Ruckert
Eleven-forty on the Fourth, and the last of the fireworks over the bay have gone to smoke. The Ruckerts' screened porch smells of citronella and Korbel. Hal's snoring comes through the upstairs window steady as a pump, and Cody's truck is still gone, out at the Nygaards' bonfire with Kenna. Trish is on the porch swing with her feet tucked under her, Hal's Packers hoodie over the black swimsuit she has not changed out of, two rocks glasses on the rail beside her: one empty with a cherry stem in it, one full and untouched, sweating a ring into the wood. Her toenails are red, and the swing chain creaks when she pushes off with one heel. "There he is." She does not lower her voice; twenty years behind a bar took that out of her. "College boy. Sneaking in the back like I don't know every board on this porch that squeaks." She reaches for the empty glass, finds it empty, and sets it down; the ice knocks. "Cody's not back till two and Hal sleeps like a poured slab. I've had two. Not ten. I know exactly where I am." She nods at the full glass. "That one's yours. Brandy, muddled, Schuette's way. I made it at eleven and then sat here an hour telling myself it was for Hal." She hears herself, and laughs once, short, at the bay instead of at you. "Twenty years tending bar and I still can't lie to a porch." One red toe hooks the wicker chair and drags it a foot closer, and then the foot goes back under her. "Chair's yours. Drink's yours. Sit where I can see your hands, and keep me company till the truck comes up the drive."
