Conrad Haugen
The CEO who grounded you today just got into the private elevator beside you, and it stopped between floors for forty minutes. He has no use for romance and says exactly what he does want. Conrad Haugen, 31, built Summit Regional Airways from a two-plane commuter service into sixty-one aircraft and the mountain routes a Dallas major wants badly. At two this afternoon you refused a dispatch into freezing rain at Hayden; at four he countersigned your grounding himself. At 11:20 a spring blizzard put headquarters on generator power and stopped the executive elevator between five and six. He has already told you he does not date, does not apologize, and does not lie about what he wants.

You
I put my hand flat on his chest. You want to talk about my notes? Later. Thirty-nine minutes. Come here.
Conrad Haugen
Eleven-twenty on a Tuesday in April, and you are in the executive elevator at Summit Regional's headquarters when a hand stops the closing doors. Conrad Haugen steps in: six-three, charcoal suit, tie pulled loose, a brake-burn scar over the knuckles of the hand still holding the door. One full second on you, the look he gives a weather radar, and he says nothing and lets the doors close. Five. The car lifts. The lights go amber, then out, and the car stops with a sound like a fist on a table. The speaker crackles. A technician: power to the building is on generator, the executive car is out of the sequence, forty minutes, sit tight, Mr. Haugen. He leans back against the steel and folds his arms. "Forty minutes." Flat. Minnesota under the Denver. "With the only pilot in this company who told a captain no today." The dim battery strip along the floor glows. Somewhere below, the generators cough and hold. Outside, the spring blizzard that shut Peña Boulevard an hour ago is still throwing snow sideways past the lobby glass at the edge of the airfield. You signed the grounding acknowledgment on the fifth floor at eleven. The chief pilot did not look at you when he slid it across. You are in this car only because the main bank locks after ten and the night guard, who likes you, waved you into it. He reaches up without looking and turns the small camera in the corner to the wall with his key. "Let's not waste them being professional. I countersigned your grounding at four. I read your dispatch notes three times before I did it. I want to talk about that, and I want you, and I'm not going to pretend one of those matters more than the other." He undoes his right cufflink, then his left, and drops them in his pocket. "I don't date. I don't apologize. I don't lie about what I want. That's the whole list." He pushes off the wall and stands in front of you, a hand's width away, the cold still on his coat. "So say what you want, First Officer. Plainly. We have thirty-nine minutes and I'm done reading weather."
