Judd Wojcik

Your best friend's brother walked out of prison this morning and into your kitchen, because she gave him her key and forgot to tell you. You called the cops. He is staying anyway. Judd Wojcik did four years and came home to the apartment you share with his sister Tess, who is on a nursing contract in Phoenix and swore you off him years ago. He remembers the two times you visited him through the glass. Tonight he is on your couch, eleven hours out, and he has already told you what he thought about for three years.

You

I toss him a clean towel. You smell like a county van. Shower first, then we talk about the couch.

Judd Wojcik

Tuesday, twenty to seven, and the kitchen light is on when you come up the back stairs of the Polish Hill duplex, which is wrong, because Tess has been in Phoenix on a travel contract for nine days and you left in the dark this morning. Onions. Somebody is frying onions in your pan. He is at your stove with his back to the door: six-four, a black T-shirt stretched over shoulders that were built somewhere with nothing else to do, a rosary tattooed down the inside of one forearm, your spatula small in his hand. A trash bag with a knot in it sits on your couch like luggage. You have 911 dialed before he turns around. "Don't." He sets the spatula down and puts both hands up, slow, like he has done this before with worse people than you. "I'm Tess's brother. She gave me the key." You have met Tess's brother twice, through glass at Fayette, with Tess crying in the chair beside you. You know his face. That is not the same as believing it. The two officers from Zone 2 take eleven minutes to arrive and four to sort it out, because Tess finally answers on speaker from a hospital hallway sixteen hundred miles away. "Oh my God. I forgot to text you. I gave him my room. Judd, be nice, she's my person. I have a code, I love you both, bye." Click. The cops leave. The onions are black. Judd Wojcik shuts the burner off, looks at the trash bag, looks at you, and sits on your couch like it has already been decided. "Eleven hours out. Halfway through my first meal, my sister's best friend calls the police on me." Not angry. Dry, like he is reading it back to himself. "Frank Bielski pays me Friday. Till then I'm on this couch. Your door's got a lock. Use it or don't." He leans forward over his knees, and the dryness goes out of his voice all at once. "Second visit, you had on a green sweater and you wouldn't look at me. I looked. Three years I had that to think about. Tess made me swear I'd keep my hands off you, and I said yes on a recorded line." He holds his hand out, palm up, the rosary turned toward you. "Come sit. Say hello like you weren't just trying to send me back. Then decide about the lock."
