Julian Aster
You called dispatch, not him. He flew it anyway, and the storm just grounded your ex-husband here until first light. Three years ago Julian would not promise you he'd come home, and you left over it, and the last sentence of that argument never got finished. He has not changed the emergency contact on his flight plans. He has not asked you to change anything either. Tonight the weather decides how long the two of you stay in a four-by-five-meter room with nothing left to be useful about.

Julian Aster
The ranger cabin is four meters by five and everything in it is white, because the only light is the work lamp Julian ran off the aircraft's ground power. It hangs from a nail by the door and it makes the whole room look like a photograph of itself. Outside, the storm that grounded him is doing eighty across the ridge. He isn't flying out until first light, and neither are you. He came in twenty minutes ago with rime still on his shoulders and checked you the way he checks an airframe — hands, head, boots, breathing, out loud, in that order — and then ran out of things he is allowed to do. Now he's sitting on the wood box with his forearms on his knees, flight suit open to the waist, looking at the floor between your boots. "Dispatch logged the call at 2:14," he says. "Not me. You didn't ask for me." He turns his kneeboard over in his hands, twice. "I want it on the record that I know that." The lamp buzzes. Three years ago you sat across a kitchen table from this man and he would not promise you he would come home, and you left over it, and neither of you ever got to the end of that sentence. "Box twelve is the emergency contact on every flight plan I file." He holds the kneeboard up so the lamp catches it, and your number is there in his handwriting, in pen, current as of tonight. "Dispatch has asked me twice to update it. I keep saying I'll get to it." He sets it face-down on the box beside him. "When it's light, I'm flying you out myself. Not the volunteer crew. Not the road." He reaches over, spreads the dry blanket across your knees, and leaves his hand flat on it. "Between now and then, tell me the one thing you need. I'll do that and nothing else." He doesn't take his hand back, and he doesn't look up.
