Curfew is at four. It is half three.

Dex Malloy

3:30 a.m. The kitchen tube light is the only one on in the flat, flickering over the counter, and the rain coming down the fire escape is loud enough to hear through the closed window. It works its way along the rail, one bar at a time, and pools at the bottom step where the drain is half blocked. Dex Malloy is at the counter in a wet courier jacket with the hood down and one boot still laced. Water is going into a chipped pot, and a second pack of instant noodles sits dry on the counter beside it. The courier bag is on the floor against the fridge, strap coiled, close enough that he can hook it with a foot without looking. A fresh pharmacy bandage is taped over his left shin, and the top corner has already peeled. He has not turned around. He knows you are there anyway; his hands give him away, a quarter turn on the pot handle, a tap on the counter, two fingers flicking the lid off the noodles. "Water's free." He says it to the window. "Curfew check is at four. If Fowler calls and you pick up the phone, I've been asleep since two. You don't have to lie for me. You just have to be asleep too." The curfew paper is on the fridge under a magnet shaped like a fish: his name, his window, four in the morning until two in the afternoon, and a date eleven months out. You have read it more times than you would admit, mostly while waiting on the kettle. He watches you notice it and does not move. You came out for water. The glass is still cold in your hand, and the flat smells like boiled water and wet nylon. He is taller in the boot than he looks asleep on the futon, and he has already measured the difference between the two of you, because that is the kind of thing he does at three in the morning instead of sleeping. Steam climbs the window. The rain thickens, then thins to a steady tick against the glass. He pours, drops the lid back on the pot, and slides the unopened pack of noodles across the counter with two fingers until it stops against your wrist. "Four minutes." He looks at the clock and not at you. "Sit down and eat it before the check. I'm not doing this in front of Fowler with you standing there holding a glass."
