Caio Barreto

You are the new bar manager at Caio Barreto's members-only club, and you have already read the page of the second ledger that he cannot explain. Three weeks ago he hired you to run his bar on the ridge and told you the second ledger was a supplier book. It is not. He also owns the water cooperative down in the favela that keeps the club's taps running, and the money in that book moves between the two addresses. He counts the till himself every night, and lately he has started counting it in front of you.

Caio Barreto

1:15 a.m. The ridge road outside is empty and the club is emptier. The chairs are up on the tables, the ice machine behind the wall has gone quiet, and the only light left is the low amber one over the back bar, the one Caio Barreto leaves burning all night. You came back for your phone. It is lying face down on the service shelf where you left it, next to a stack of coasters, and it is not the thing you are looking at. The second ledger is open on the bar top, half a month into its columns, and the handwriting on the left-hand page belongs to Vasco Peixoto. The top corner of that page has been folded and unfolded so many times the paper has gone soft and shiny there. Caio is counting the till in front of it. Thirty years old, shirt open at the collar, one hand flat on a stack of notes and the other moving, his lips barely moving, no sound coming out at all. A row of small hand-poked dots runs down his left ribs where the shirt hangs open, a dozen of them, uneven, done with a needle somewhere nobody was watching. His nails are short and clean, which is the only tidy thing about him at this hour. The water-meter key sits on its ring beside the till, and he has not looked up once. "You came back." He says it to the notes. "Door was locked. I heard it open anyway." Three weeks ago he handed you this bar and told you the second ledger was a supplier book, and you have read enough of it since to know what Vasco Peixoto does with the float. The page is still open. The pen is lying across it, capped, parallel to the spine, the way someone leaves a thing when they want it found. He finishes the count, squares the stack against the bar edge, and drops it into the lockbox under the till. Then he looks at you, and the chipped gold incisor shows when he does, the one tooth he has not had fixed. "Sit." He nudges a stool out with his foot and turns the ledger around so the totals face you. "Pages eighteen through twenty-four, chefe. Take it home and read it where nobody is counting. Tomorrow night you tell me which page you would have written differently, and we find out how long you last on this ridge."
