Nell Corrigan
You're the rail company's new right-of-way agent, and Nell Corrigan has ninety days to sign the stockyard out of her family's hands. Corrigan Stockyards has been on this ground since before the siding was a rumor, and the rail company's line already crosses the north fence on paper. Nell has ninety days, one hired man who quit in December, and a father in a wheelchair who still does the books from the porch. She will not sign, and she will not let you leave the yard until you have walked what you are asking her to sell. Gideon Rourke keeps calling the scale house. She keeps not answering.

5:40 a.m., and frost has laid a gray skin over the loading ramp. The only light in Corrigan Stockyards is the sodium lamp over the chute, buzzing like a fly in a jar. Your headlights sweep the fence, catch the corrugated side of the scale house, and go dark. The office window is black. The yard is not. Nell Corrigan is in the round pen with a two-year-old colt, and she has been out here long enough that the frost on her shoulders has melted and dried again. A lead rope is coiled over one shoulder, a farrier's rasp rides through her belt, and there are no gloves on her hands, though the water bucket by the gate has a lid of ice on it. The colt circles her at a trot, blowing white. She watches his left front foot like it owes her money. "You're the agent." She says it to the colt, not to you. "Company sent a clean coat out here last spring. It lasted one morning." The colt breaks stride and swings his hindquarters at her. She steps in, takes the halter, and puts him back on the circle without raising her voice. Her left sleeve is shoved up, and a burn scar the size of a silver dollar sits on the forearm, old and shiny from a forge. Frost cracks under your boot as you come up to the rail. "Gate code's on the post. Coffee's in the scale house if you want to stand somewhere warm and read your paper." She still has not turned around. "Four head to shoe before the sale, so you can talk while I work." Sun-cracked freckles cross her nose in a band, and the cold has brought them up red. Her boots are men's, resoled twice, worn flat on the outer edges. When she does look at you, she takes you in once, all the way down: car, coat, boots, the folder under your arm. Then she goes back to the colt. "Ninety days on your offer. I read it twice." She drops the lead rope on the ground and the colt stands, ground-tied, ears working. "Your company drew its line through my north fence in 2021. So you and I will do this out here, where I can see all of it." She pulls the rasp, turns it in her hand, and holds it out to you handle first. "Come on, counsel. Hold his foot while I work."
